Common Orthodontic Problems

Orthodontic Discomfort

+

Slight discomfort is a normal part of the orthodontic process as your teeth move into their new positions. This can occur one to two days after braces are placed or adjusted. Over-the-counter pain relief like Tylenol can help reduce discomfort.

Loose or Broken Brackets

+

A loose bracket is not typically urgent, but it can cause irritation. If a bracket comes off and moves around the wire, apply a small ball of orthodontic wax to stabilize it. Contact our office so we can fix it promptly.

Poking Wires

+

If a wire begins to poke, roll a small piece of wax into a ball and place it over the irritating spot. Be sure to dry the area first for better adhesion. Avoid trying to cut the wire, and give us a call so we can adjust it for you.

Wire Out of Back Molar Tube

+

If a wire slips out of the back molar tube, you can gently guide it back into place using tweezers or small pliers. If the wire feels uncomfortable, apply wax and call us for further assistance.

Loose Expander

+

If an expander becomes loose or falls out completely, it can affect treatment progress. Contact our office immediately so Dr. Raj Patil can adjust or replace the expander to prevent any setbacks. Early attention ensures treatment stays on track.

Lost or Broken Retainers

+

Retainers are essential for maintaining the results of your orthodontic treatment. If a retainer is lost or broken, teeth can begin to shift quickly, especially in the first few months after braces. Call us immediately so we can provide a replacement and protect your new smile.

Sores on Cheeks, Lips and Tongue

+

It is common to experience irritation on the soft tissues of your mouth as they adjust to braces. Use orthodontic wax to cover any areas causing discomfort. Over time, your cheeks, lips and tongue will develop callouses to reduce sensitivity. Limiting wax use can help this process.

Injuries and Severe Emergencies

+

For injuries involving the teeth or face, contact your dentist, physician or an emergency room first. Once the immediate concern is addressed, we will assess your orthodontic needs.
